OCD-UK Conferences

One of our aims is to provide sufferers with the opportunity to integrate with other sufferers and provide them with a forum to listen to and ask questions of OCD experts.

One of the ways we want to do this is through a series of local OCD Conferences and in 2005 we have hosted two such events in Scotland and Bristol.

Greenwich, London - Sat 3rd September 2005

The Maritime Greenwich Campus was the venue for our third OCD conference of 2005 where we were joined by about 180 people. The campus is centred on the principal buildings of the Old Royal Naval College, part of a World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames. Designed and started by Wren, but finished under the direction of Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh in 1712, the King William Court was the location for our conference.

We had 4 informative lectures and a choice of 2 workshops for delegates to choose from.

Dr Victoria Bream from the Institute of Psychiatry at the Maudsley in London started the day by explaining exactly what CBT is in a short lecture entitled 'What is CBT? - A beginners guide'.

Professor Paul Salkovskis was the keynote speaker whose lecture was 'Fact and Fiction in OCD'. In this presentation, Paul tried to clarify what we know (and don't know) about the understanding and treatment of OCD, and how sufferers and carers can best make use of such information.

The afternoon session was started by 18 year old OCD sufferer, Jo Griffiths who together with Dr Roz Shafran discussed how OCD can affect young people.

Following workshops for sufferers and another workshop for family members; the day was completed by Mr Blake Stobie also from the Institute of Psychiatry whose lecture was 'How to get the most of your therapy', the aim of which to outline the stages involved in the treatment of OCD, and the difficulties which people often have at these points in therapy.

For those people that attended the event, we have been given kind permission by the speakers to allow their powerpoint presentations to be displayed on our website. The slides are intended for Greenwich conference attendees's only, non attendees may also view the slides but we should point out that some only make sense when accompanied with the verbal content of the lectures.

Bristol - Sat 30th April 2005

This conference was attended by over 170 people during the Bank Holiday weekend and in the wonderful lecture theatre of the University of West England the audience listened intently to the two keynote lecturers; Dr Jeffrey Schwartz and Dr Frederick Toates.

Dr Toates lecture was particularly interesting because he talked about his duel role of Psychologist and OCD sufferer. Dr Schwartz talked about the Four Steps and both fielded questions from the audience and later took part in a book signing.

We also had small lectures from Triumph Over Phobia and a Hypnotherapist.

The success of the day though was Scott and what can only be described as the most remarkable talk from an OCD sufferer ever heard at an OCD Conference in this country. Both speaker and guests had tears in their eyes at one point due to the moving nature of the talk.

Stirling, Scotland - Sat 19th February 2005

Our first ever event was attended on a cold winters morning by over 150 people, and considering the atrocious weather locally this was a tremendous turnout.

The day comprised of key lectures from eminent OCD expert, Dr Jeffrey Schwartz talking about his Four Steps with Mindfulness approach and about his work coaching Leonardo DiCaprio during the filming of the film The Aviator.

In between the keynote lectures, we had two OCD sufferers telling their stories and their personal battle with the condition. We then heard some personal experiences from Steve, a young Glaswegian man with OCD, a superbly well told and moving story.

Later in the day, we heard from Scott, who considering he was only given 10 minutes notice before being asked to talk, did a remarkable job!

We were also delighted to welcome Tourette Scotland along to talk about the wonderful work that they carry out North of the border.

Finally the day ended with a workshop session where people had the opportunity to quiz Dr Schwartz or attend a 'family & friends' workshop.
