Christine's Artwork

Three Trees in the Sunset

I have found as a sufferer of OCD that artwork has been an excellent distraction although at times it has been difficult because of my contamination OCD. At one time I was concerned about the use of artist’s coloured pencils because they contain lead. In addition I tend to be thwarted by depression and indecision: What shall I paint? In which medium should I paint it? Should I draw in coloured pencil or perhaps pastel or a mixture? Finally when a decision is reached I immediately wish I had done something different. So there are obstacles. However despite these and similar obsessive-compulsive problems I have derived some satisfaction from my art, although as a perfectionist, a trait common to those like myself who suffer with OCD I am never satisfied. I have had no formal training; my artwork has simply been a hobby.

Most of the pictures were drawn or painted from photographs taken in some of the places which my husband, son and I have visited over the years. I would love to be able to work from real life, to set up an easel in one of these beautiful locations but sadly I am not confident to work outside nor is this possible with my OCD.

With the exception of Glastonbury most are of locations in the northeast where my family and I have spent many holidays over the last decade or so. We now live in Co Durham after moving there from the South East.

Flowers are also a favourite subject of mine, which I paint in a variety of media, again most are painted from photographs. I am slow at painting in fact everything takes me an inordinate period of time to complete due mainly to my OCD, and in recent years to chronic daily headaches. Therefore for the most part painting from real life is not practical as the flowers would wilt, fade and die before I could complete of my paintings.
Drawings

The drawings are rendered with a technical drawing pen and graphite. My paintings are rendered in a variety of media including watercolour, gouache and acrylic.
