Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is becoming more recognised and accepted as a way to treat many forms of anxiety, stress and phobias and is commonly used to help with such problems as, eating disorders, stress, anxiety and giving up smoking.

Although Hypnotherapy is becoming more recognised, there is still no medical evidence to suggest how effective such alternative methods for treating OCD are. At the present time, such alternatives can't be specifically recommended as a treatment method for OCD, however they may help some individuals when all other options have failed.

Hypnotherapy is a technique which uses hypnosis to reach into the subconscious mind for solutions to problems with which the conscious mind has been unable to deal. The altered state occurring under hypnosis is similar to a state of deep meditation, where the recuperative abilities of the psyche are allowed to flow more freely.

Hypnosis is a natural, altered state of consciousness, where the conscious (analytical) mind is bypassed, and the subconscious (creative) mind is accessed. This allows the client to use the power of visualisation and suggestion, given by oneself or another, to change and improve behaviour patterns.

A hypnotised person remains in full control of his or her behaviour, and usually is able to recall the whole experience. It is a state of mental and physical relaxation, along with a more focused sense of concentration.

Although the eyes are usually closed, hypnosis is not sleep (as it is often popularly assumed), and most people find that they are more aware of smells, sounds, and feelings than usual. This concentrated awareness is what allows the hypnotherapist to plant positive suggestions and images in the mind of the client to bring about lasting changes.

Self-hypnosis can be induced by listening to relaxation tapes; by creating your own visual imagery; by meditation or Progressive Muscle Relaxation. You experience a moderate level of relaxation while maintaining a certain conscious awareness. It can help you work on creative and positive suggestions for new and healthy behaviour.

Hypnosis is a very useful “tool” and one of many, that can be used to help aid sufferers of OCD.

It is always advisable to check the credentials of Hypnotherapist.
