Citalopram

Citalopram (trade names: Celexa, Cipramil)

(Trade Name: Cipramil)

This drug has been available in the UK since 1995. The active ingredient is escitalopram which was introduced as a new drug in 2002.

Form: tablets or oral drops.
Children: Not recommended.
Adult dose: 20mg daily, as a single dose, in the morning or evening, increased if necessary. Maximum dose should be 60mg daily.
Older people: Maximum of 40mg daily.
Half-life: 35 hours
Drug interactions: May have fewer interactions with other drugs than other SSRIs.

The NICE guidelines (November 2005) recommend Citalopram but states that it does not currently have a UK Marketing Authorisation licence.
