Deep brain stimulation helps severe OCD, but caution and compassion advised

For patients most severely afflicted with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, electrical stimulation of a brain network can rebalance their emotional state, helping them respond to conventional therapy when it never worked before. New long-term results show that patients' improvements remain if the treatment continues. But, as with other OCD treatments, DBS is not a cure and can have side effects.

One leading doctor researching DBS suggests, "What DBS really does is make you into an average OCD patient".

IAPT Centres to close

NHS trusts in Birmingham are already shutting down some Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) centres because of financial cuts.

Launched with a great fanfare just a couple of years ago, centres offering the IAPT programme are to be closed, even though the Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, promised that the programme would be expanded six months ago.

The IAPT project offers 'talking therapies', like CBT, to people who suffer from anxiety and depression.
